Background of the Study
Income inequality remains one of the most pressing socio-economic challenges in Nigeria. Although GDP growth is often touted as a sign of economic progress, its benefits do not always trickle down to all segments of society. In Nigeria, rapid economic expansion has sometimes been accompanied by widening income disparities, leading to social unrest and hampering sustainable development (Oluwaseun, 2023). A growing GDP, while indicative of overall economic strength, may mask underlying structural issues such as unequal access to education, healthcare, and economic opportunities. The distribution of wealth remains uneven, and the benefits of economic growth are often concentrated among a small elite, leaving large segments of the population in poverty.
The theoretical debate surrounding the relationship between GDP growth and income inequality is complex. Some scholars argue that economic growth naturally leads to more equitable income distribution through job creation and increased government revenues for social programs, while others contend that without deliberate policy interventions, growth can exacerbate existing inequalities (Adejumo, 2024). In Nigeria, the challenge is compounded by regional disparities, a large informal sector, and historical socio-political factors that hinder inclusive growth. Recent empirical studies have attempted to quantify this relationship, but findings remain inconclusive, suggesting that the link between GDP and income inequality is influenced by multiple mediating factors such as government policy, investment in human capital, and structural reforms (Chinwe, 2025).
This study seeks to evaluate how GDP growth affects income inequality in Nigeria by analyzing recent economic data and exploring the underlying structural dynamics. It aims to determine whether rapid GDP growth is conducive to reducing income disparities or whether it perpetuates inequality by favoring certain sectors or regions. The insights generated from this research are expected to inform policymakers about the conditions under which economic growth can be more equitably distributed, thereby fostering sustainable development and social stability.
Statement of the Problem
Despite notable GDP growth in Nigeria over recent years, income inequality remains stubbornly high. The anticipated trickle-down effect of economic expansion has not materialized for large segments of the population, resulting in persistent poverty and social tension. This disparity suggests that GDP growth alone does not guarantee improved income distribution, as structural barriers, regional imbalances, and inadequate social policies hinder equitable wealth distribution (Ibrahim, 2023). The problem is further compounded by the fact that rapid economic growth has, in some cases, benefited only a select portion of society, leaving behind vulnerable communities and exacerbating the wealth gap.
The disconnect between overall economic growth and improvements in income distribution poses significant challenges for policymakers, as it undermines social cohesion and long-term economic stability. Additionally, the coexistence of high GDP growth and deep-seated inequality raises questions about the sustainability of such growth models. If the benefits of growth are not widely shared, economic progress may be short-lived, and the risk of social unrest increases. This study addresses the urgent need to understand the dynamics between GDP growth and income inequality in Nigeria and to identify the factors that mediate this relationship. By doing so, the research aims to provide evidence-based recommendations that can help design policies promoting a more inclusive distribution of economic gains.
Objectives of the Study
• To analyze the relationship between GDP growth and income inequality in Nigeria.
• To identify the structural and policy factors that influence income distribution during periods of economic growth.
• To propose policy recommendations for achieving more equitable growth outcomes.
Research Questions
• How does GDP growth correlate with changes in income inequality in Nigeria?
• What structural factors contribute to the persistence of income inequality amid economic growth?
• Which policy measures can reduce income disparities in a growing economy?
Research Hypotheses
• H1: GDP growth is positively associated with increased income inequality in Nigeria.
• H2: Structural factors such as education and regional disparities moderate the relationship between GDP growth and income distribution.
• H3: Targeted social and economic policies can mitigate the adverse effects of GDP growth on income inequality.
Scope and Limitations of the Study
This study focuses on analyzing secondary data from national statistics and household surveys over the past decade. Limitations include potential data discrepancies, the influence of informal economic activities, and difficulties in isolating the impact of GDP growth from other socio-economic factors.
Definitions of Terms
• Income Inequality: The uneven distribution of income across a population.
• GDP Growth: The annual percentage increase in a nation’s economic output.
• Inclusive Growth: Economic growth that benefits all segments of society.
